our story so far.
I guess our story begins 2000 years ago, when the earliest Christians started to meet outdoors in Jerusalem and then in people’s houses, celebrating the incredible life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. From the earliest days, church was never about ‘the building’ but about the people who came together to devote themselves to praising God, welcoming outsiders and living out the call of Jesus upon their lives – to love God and love other people as themselves.
St John’s Community Church as a local church is therefore a relative newcomer! The church building was built in 1892-3 by Kendall and Bakes of Idle, in an Early English style. The modern church hall where we now meet was built in the 1970s. However, in the 130-odd years our buildings have existed, we have sought always to reflect the life of the earliest church, meeting together, growing in faith together, and welcoming those in the community of Greengates and beyond to join us.
We would love for you to come and join us - on a Sunday afternoon in person, at our termly groups run for those interested in finding out more about Jesus, or to just to have a coffee with someone who can listen.
Covid has challenged us like everyone else, but we are persevering to share the good news of Jesus Christ with everyone. This includes our current plans to re-vitalize the church building as a multi-function site that welcomes our community and our continued involvement in the Bradford East Good Neighbour project.
Jesus said that he came so that we “might have life and life to the full” (John 10:10). Come and explore with us the hope and transformation that Jesus Christ brings to anyone, anywhere, anytime.
